For most drivers, working out how to improve fuel economy is not about one magic fix. We see this a lot with everyday cars and vans. Owners often assume poor MPG is just part of getting older, especially on diesel vehicles with DPF, EGR or carbon build-up issues. In reality, a drop in fuel economy is often an early sign that something is off, even if the vehicle still feels usable.

How to improve fuel economy starts with the basics

The simplest gains usually come from the things drivers overlook because they seem too obvious. Tyre pressures are a good example. If they are low, rolling resistance increases and the engine has to work harder to keep the car moving. That means more fuel used for no real benefit. On a van or family car carrying tools, passengers or luggage, the effect can be even worse.

Servicing matters just as much. A clogged air filter, tired oil, old spark plugs on a petrol engine, or poor-quality combustion on a diesel can all chip away at economy. None of these faults need to be dramatic to cost you money. Sometimes the vehicle still starts, drives and pulls reasonably well, but it is no longer operating cleanly or efficiently.

Engine health and fuel economy are closely linked

If those basics are covered and the vehicle still feels heavy, flat or expensive to run, it is time to think beyond routine maintenance. Poor fuel economy is often a symptom, not the main problem. Carbon contamination, airflow issues, DPF behaviour, EGR faults and weak calibration can all sit behind it.

That is why the best results usually come from treating fuel economy as part of overall engine health. When the engine breathes properly, burns fuel cleanly and delivers torque efficiently, better MPG tends to follow naturally. You are not trying to cheat the fuel tank. You are getting the vehicle back to the way it should have been running in the first place.
